What you actually see inside
Algar de Benagil is a collapsed sea cave a few hundred metres east of Benagil village. The roof fell in at some point and left a circular hole open to the sky — the reason every photograph of this place looks the same. Underneath it there is a small beach of pale sand, and two arches open to the sea. Boats come in through the wider arch, turn, and go back out; the light through the opening moves across the sand as the morning goes on. The coast either side is the same soft golden limestone, worn into stacks, tunnels and half a dozen smaller caves that most trips visit on the way.

The harbour rules allow a motorboat two minutes inside Algar de Benagil and a guided kayak group eight, and the extra $11 over the catamaran is really the price of those six minutes. Why nobody lands on the beach inside
Nobody gets out of the boat inside. Disembarking on the sand under the opening, and entering the cave by swimming or on anything unpowered, were both prohibited by the Portimão harbour master in 2024. Boats and kayaks come in through the eastern arch, hold in the chamber for the time they are allowed, and leave the same way.

Every operator on this coast publishes one seat price and charges it everywhere — their own kiosk on the marina, the booking platforms, the hotel desk in Albufeira. What changes is whether there is space left on a morning with flat water, and in July that is the whole game.

What the listing doesn’t show you
- Whether the boat goes inside. Almost no listing says it outright. Large hulls hold outside the arch; small ones go in for the two minutes the rules allow.
- Entry is not guaranteed. If the swell is running into the mouth the skipper will pass by outside. That is not a refundable change.
- Marina parking. Portimão, Albufeira and Lagos all charge for it in summer, and it is not part of your ticket.
- Tipping. Not expected in Portugal, for skippers or crew.

Is a Benagil caves tour worth it?
Thirty euros for two hours on a catamaran is not a lot of money, and the trip is genuinely good — but it will not put you inside the cave, and half the disappointed reviews on this coast come from exactly that mismatch. Decide first whether you want to be under the opening or to see the coast comfortably. They are two different days.
What makes it worth it

- Half a dozen smaller caves and arches on the same stretch of coast
- Water clear enough to see the bottom at the swim stop
- Dolphins on the way out often enough that operators advertise them

The sea builds through the day as the wind gets up, and by mid-afternoon the small boats are the first to be pulled. The first departures also reach the cave before the queue forms — and with a two-minute limit inside for motorboats, waiting your turn behind three other hulls is not a small thing. Book early, and if the morning is blown out you still have the afternoon to be moved into.

What it's like
Ninety seconds inside Algar de Benagil
The part nobody warns you about is how ordinary the start is. You queue on a pontoon between a fuel dock and a row of hire cars, someone reads names off a clipboard, and then the harbour wall slides past and the coast turns into something else entirely.
The limestone begins almost immediately. It is soft, pale and full of holes, and the Atlantic has spent a long time taking it apart: stacks standing offshore, arches you can drive a boat through, tunnels that go in twenty metres and stop. Most of it is unnamed. The skipper slows at the good ones without being asked.
Benagil itself announces nothing. It is a gap in the cliff a few hundred metres east of the village, no wider than the boat, and you only understand what it is once you are through it. Inside, the chamber opens out: a domed roof maybe twenty metres up, two arches open to the sea, and a small beach of pale sand along the back.
And then there is the hole. The roof collapsed at some point and left a circular opening straight up to the sky, and a column of light comes down through it onto the sand. In the morning it lands at the back of the chamber and moves as the sun climbs. That is the photograph, and it is one of the rare cases where the photograph is honest.
What the photograph leaves out is the traffic. In July there can be six hulls in there at once, each doing a slow circle before backing out. The skippers are used to it and it works, but if you were expecting a private moment under the opening, book the first departure of the day or take a kayak, which can sit in the corner with the engine off.
Out the other side the coast keeps going. Praia da Marinha is fifteen minutes east, and most trips anchor off it for a swim in water clear enough to see the anchor on the bottom. On the way back the sun is higher, the rock has gone from gold to white, and the caves you came through look like different caves.
It costs thirty euros. What you are actually buying is the ninety seconds inside the chamber, and every other decision on this page — catamaran or speedboat or kayak, Albufeira or Lagos, nine in the morning or two in the afternoon — is really a decision about those ninety seconds.

How much is a Benagil cave tour?
Seats start at $33 for the catamaran from Albufeira and $34 for the speedboat from Lagos. Those are the same prices at the marina kiosk, online and through your hotel.
Can you swim into Benagil cave?
No. Entering the cave by swimming, or on any unpowered flotation aid, was prohibited by the Portimão harbour master in Edital 019/2024, along with disembarking or sunbathing on the sand inside. The only legal ways in are a licensed boat or a guided kayak or paddleboard.
How long do you actually get inside the cave?
The same edital sets it precisely: a motorised boat may stay two minutes inside Algar de Benagil, and a guided group of kayaks or paddleboards may stay up to eight. That is the real difference between a boat ticket and a kayak ticket, and no listing mentions it.
How many boats can be in the cave at once?
Up to three motorised boats under twelve metres, or one boat over twelve metres on its own. Kayaks work in groups of six with one guide, and up to seven non-motorised craft may be inside at the same time, entering through the eastern arch.
Do the big catamarans go inside Benagil cave?
They hold outside and show you the cave from the water. Only one vessel over twelve metres is allowed inside at a time, and the cheap high-volume catamarans are not built around a two-minute turn in a rock chamber. If being inside matters, book a speedboat or a kayak.
