The best Benagil cave tour: twelve trips, one straight answer

Every ranking of Benagil trips you will read online sorts by price or by star rating. Both are the wrong first cut, because they put two completely different products in the same list.

The first question is whether the hull goes into the cave. Under the harbour rules, three motorised boats under twelve metres may be inside at once, or one larger boat on its own, and they get two minutes. Guided kayaks work in sixes with a guide, up to seven craft inside, and they get eight minutes. Everything else is a boat trip along a nice coast.

So the ranking below splits first on access, then on what the money buys, then on the things that decide the morning in practice: which port you leave from, how the boat handles, and whether the trip survives a bit of swell.

Eight minutes against two. That is the entire argument, and it costs about eleven dollars more than the cheapest seat on the coast.

The trip is built sensibly: a catamaran carries the group out so you are not paddling for an hour to get there, and the kayaking is short, sheltered and needs no experience. Inside the chamber there is no engine running, which changes the place completely — the sound of water on rock in a domed space is the thing people describe afterwards, and nobody on a speedboat ever hears it.

It has two real weaknesses. It is the first thing cancelled when there is swell, and there is a minimum age. If either applies to you, the ranking below starts at second place.

The speedboat from Albufeira at $34 has 6,734 reviews, more than anything else on this coast, and it adds dolphin watching to a two-hour trip that also enters the cave. It is the safest booking on this page in the sense that it is very hard to be disappointed by it.

The speedboat from Lagos at $37 covers the better coastline. Lagos is further west, so the run to Benagil takes in Ponta da Piedade’s stacks and a long stretch of grottoes before you get anywhere near the famous one. If you are staying in Lagos this is obvious; if you are staying in Albufeira it is a long drive for a marginal gain.

Both get the same two minutes inside. Choose on where you are sleeping.

Nothing on this page is bad. The twelve trips are all rated 4.5 or above by thousands of people, and that is not an accident — this is a mature, competitive coast and the weak operators do not survive.

But two things are commonly bought for the wrong reason. The first is the cheapest catamaran seat, bought by people who wanted the cave. It is a good trip and it is the wrong trip for them.

The second is the private sailing boat at $534. Sailing is lovely and this is a well-rated trip, but a sailing hull is not the craft that goes into a narrow arch. If you want a private boat and the cave, take the motor yacht instead.

Whatever you book, the shape of the morning is the same. Check-in on a pontoon, life jackets, a briefing, and then the harbour wall. Once past it the coast starts doing the work.

The limestone begins long before Benagil, and this is the part that decides whether a trip feels full or padded. Stacks standing offshore, arches wide enough to pass through, tunnels that go twenty metres into the headland and stop. On a small boat you go into a good number of them; on a catamaran you look at them from the water.

Then Benagil, then the swim stop — almost always off Praia da Marinha, in water clear enough to see the bottom. Ten minutes on the short trips, longer on the cruises.

Then back, with the sun higher and the same rock a different colour. Nobody mentions that in the listings and it is one of the better parts.
