Benagil cave and dolphin tour: which trips actually look for them

The water off the central Algarve holds resident and visiting dolphins year round. Common dolphins are the ones most often seen — small, fast, and usually in groups that can run to dozens. Bottlenose are bigger, less numerous and more inclined to approach a boat.

They are wild animals in open water. A good skipper knows the ground, watches for birds working the surface and for other boats holding position, and will run out several kilometres if that is where the animals are. A bad one drives the same loop and shrugs.

Sightings are commonest from late spring through autumn, when the water is warmer and the sea flat enough to spot a dorsal fin at distance. In a lumpy sea you could pass within a hundred metres and see nothing.

Portuguese rules govern how boats behave around cetaceans — approach angles, distances, engine handling. A trip that stops short of the animals and lets them come is following the rules, not being timid.

The speedboat from Albufeira, $34. Two to two and a half hours, a search for dolphins on the way out, the caves and Benagil on the way back, and a swim stop. It has more reviews than anything else on this coast by a wide margin, which is itself a kind of evidence. It is also small enough to enter the cave.

The small-group trip from Lagoa, $65. Three hours, a family-run operation, and a marine biologist on board doing live interpretation of the marine life, the geology and the local history. It is rated 4.9, the highest on this coast, and the reviews say the same thing repeatedly: you learn something.

Twice the price for half the passengers and a guide who knows what a fin belongs to. Whether that is worth it depends entirely on why you are going.

From the pontoon it looks like driving around until something appears. It is not.

Skippers on this coast work known ground — the depth contours and current lines where feed concentrates — and they read the surface for the signs: birds working a patch of water, bait fish breaking, another boat holding station rather than moving. A radio call from a colleague five kilometres east will change the whole morning.

When animals are found the approach matters. Portuguese rules set how boats behave around cetaceans: you come in at an angle rather than head on, you hold at a distance, you keep the engine steady rather than surging. A boat that stops fifty metres short and waits is doing it correctly, and if the dolphins are interested they will close the gap themselves.

That is also why the small-group trips get better reviews for this. Twelve people on a quiet boat that can hold position is a different encounter from eighty people on a deck.
