Benagil cave kayak tour: the only way to stop under the opening

Edital 019/2024 of the Portimão harbour master sets the timings inside Algar de Benagil, and they are not the same for everyone. A motorised boat gets two minutes. A guided group of kayaks or paddleboards gets up to eight.

That is the whole argument for the kayak, and it costs about eleven dollars more than the cheapest catamaran seat. Eight minutes is long enough to stop paddling, look up, watch the light move on the sand and take a photograph without three other hulls in it. Two minutes is long enough to turn around.

The rules also set the shape of the group: six kayaks accompanied by one guide with first-aid certification, and no more than seven non-motorised craft inside at a time. That is why these trips are small and why they sell out first.

The transfer. You do not paddle from Portimão. A catamaran carries the group along the coast to the kayak area, which takes the distance and the swell out of the equation and is why the trip suits people who have never held a paddle.

Into the kayaks. Two to a boat, usually, with a short briefing on steering and on what not to touch. The rock is sharp and covered in barnacles at the waterline.

The caves. The guide takes the group along the cliff into the smaller grottoes first — several are wide enough to paddle into and out again — and then round to the eastern arch of Algar de Benagil.

Inside. The group holds together in the chamber. The engine noise that follows every motorboat around this coast is simply not there, and the difference that makes is the thing people write about afterwards.

Back. Out through the same arch, a short paddle, and the catamaran again.

Until a few years ago you could rent a kayak on Praia de Benagil, paddle two hundred metres east and go into the cave yourself. People also swam it. Both are now prohibited.

Edital 019/2024 of the Portimão harbour master sets out what is allowed. Entering Algar de Benagil by swimming, or on any unpowered flotation aid, is banned. So is landing on the sand inside, and so is diving in or around the cave. Boats may not enter at all when visibility drops below a kilometre, and nobody navigates there between sunset and sunrise.

Non-motorised craft operate in groups of six with one guide who must hold first-aid and basic life support certification, and no more than seven of them may be inside at once, entering through the eastern arch. The group may stay up to eight minutes.

The practical effect is simple: the guided trip is not an add-on sale, it is the only lawful way to paddle into the cave. Operators who break the rules face fines that start at €300 and go a great deal higher, which is why the guides count the minutes.

The thing nobody expects is the quiet. Every motorised trip to Benagil arrives with an engine idling and leaves with it opening up again, and the sound fills the chamber the whole time. In a kayak the group comes in on paddles and then stops.

What you hear instead is water moving against rock, which in a domed chamber twenty metres across is a much bigger sound than it should be, and whatever the guide is saying, which is usually about how the roof came down.

The light is the other half of it. The opening is roughly circular and the column of sun coming through it lands somewhere different every hour. Early, it is at the back of the chamber on the sand. By midday it is on the water and the whole cave goes pale green from underneath.

Eight minutes sounds short. It is four times what the boat next to you is allowed, and it is long enough to stop taking photographs, which is more than most people manage.

Some operators run stand-up paddleboards instead of, or alongside, kayaks. The harbour rules make no distinction: both are non-motorised craft, both work in guided groups of six, and both get the same eight minutes.

The practical difference is stability. A sit-on-top kayak is nearly impossible to fall out of and takes two people, so a nervous passenger can share with a confident one. A paddleboard is one person standing up, which is more fun and considerably wetter.

There are also hybrid trips: a speedboat covers the coast at speed, then the group transfers to kayaks or boards for the caves. That is the one to take if you want both the distance and the time inside, and only have one morning.
