Albufeira has the cheapest tickets on this coast and the widest gap between what two of them do.
The catamaran at $33 is a wide, stable, shaded boat that runs west along the cliffs, anchors for a ten-minute swim in clear water and comes back. It is a good two and a half hours and it does not go into Algar de Benagil. Its hull is too big to be working a narrow arch on a schedule.
The speedboat at $34 carries a dozen people, fits through the arch, and adds dolphin watching on the way out. It has 6,734 reviews, more than anything else on this coast.

The marina and the drive
Where to leave the car
Marina de Albufeira is about three kilometres west of the old town, past the tunnel, and is a proper marina with a large paid car park. In summer it is busy but it does not fill the way the Benagil village car park does.
From the strip and most of the resort hotels it is a ten-minute taxi. Local buses run to the marina in season. Very few of the boat trips include a transfer, so budget for getting there.
Boarding is from floating pontoons. On the speedboat you will get wet; on the catamaran you will not, unless you swim.

- Does the hull go inside?
Under twelve metres does. The high-volume catamarans hold outside and show you the cave from the water.
- How much of the trip is transit?
From the western ports a large share of the two hours is the run east. From Portimão the cave is close.
- First departure or later?
The sea builds through the day and the cave fills up. Early is better on both counts.
- Is there a swim stop?
Most trips anchor off Praia da Marinha. On the short speedboats it can be dropped if the swell is up.
- Where do you park?
Every marina here charges in summer and none of it is included in the ticket.
- What if it is cancelled?
You are refunded. Rebooking that week is your problem, so leave a spare morning.
Which port to choose
What actually changes between them
Leave from where you are staying. The differences are real but small.
Five places run boats to Benagil, and the differences are smaller than the marketing suggests. Every trip reaches the same cave and every motorised trip gets the same two minutes inside it. What changes is the journey and the price.
Portimão and Armacão de Pêra are closest, so more of the trip is spent among the caves rather than getting to them. Portimão also has the widest choice of craft, including the guided kayaks.
Albufeira has the cheapest seats and the most departures, which matters in August when the first slots go early.
Lagos is furthest but adds Ponta da Piedade, which is the best stretch of coast in the region and is on no other itinerary.
Lisbon is a different product entirely: a full day with transport, of which the boat is one part.
The honest rule is to leave from wherever you are sleeping. The drive to a marginally better port costs more in fuel, parking and morning than it returns.

The same for every port
Whichever port you leave from, the rules at the cave are the same. A motorised boat may stay two minutes inside Algar de Benagil; a guided group of kayaks or paddleboards may stay eight. Up to three motorised craft under twelve metres may be inside at once, or one larger craft alone, and up to seven non-motorised craft entering through the eastern arch.
Landing on the sand inside is prohibited, as is entering by swimming or on any unpowered float, diving in or near the cave, and navigating there between sunset and sunrise. None of this is at the operator’s discretion — it is set out in Edital 019/2024 of the Portimão harbour master, and the fines start at €300.
