Benagil cave tour from Lagos: every trip and how long the run takes

Lagos sits west of everything. Portimão is closer to Benagil, Armacão de Pêra closer still, and on a map the Lagos departures look like the inefficient choice.

On the water it is the opposite. The first thing you pass leaving Lagos is Ponta da Piedade — a headland of tall stacks, narrow passages and water that goes an improbable green in the middle of the day. It is the best single piece of coastline in the Algarve and it is not on the itinerary of any trip leaving from further east.

After that the cliffs run continuously: Praia Dona Ana, Porto de Mós, the beaches below Alvor, then the Arade mouth with the fort at Ferragudo, then Carvoeiro and Algar Seco. By the time Benagil appears you have already had an hour of the good stuff.

The trade is time inside the cave. It is two minutes from Lagos exactly as it is two minutes from anywhere else, and a two-hour trip from here spends more of itself travelling. If the chamber is the only thing you care about, leave from closer.

Lagos marina is on the east bank of the Bensafrim, across the footbridge from the old town. There is paid parking at the marina itself and free spaces further out that fill early in summer.

From the centre of Lagos it is a ten to fifteen minute walk, which makes this the easiest port on the coast to reach without a car. If you are staying in Lagos you do not need to drive at all.

Most operators want you fifteen to thirty minutes before departure. The speedboats board off a floating pontoon, barefoot or in something you do not mind getting wet.

Five places run boats to Benagil, and the differences are smaller than the marketing suggests. Every trip reaches the same cave and every motorised trip gets the same two minutes inside it. What changes is the journey and the price.

Portimão and Armacão de Pêra are closest, so more of the trip is spent among the caves rather than getting to them. Portimão also has the widest choice of craft, including the guided kayaks.

Albufeira has the cheapest seats and the most departures, which matters in August when the first slots go early.

Lagos is furthest but adds Ponta da Piedade, which is the best stretch of coast in the region and is on no other itinerary.

Lisbon is a different product entirely: a full day with transport, of which the boat is one part.

The honest rule is to leave from wherever you are sleeping. The drive to a marginally better port costs more in fuel, parking and morning than it returns.

Whichever port you leave from, the rules at the cave are the same. A motorised boat may stay two minutes inside Algar de Benagil; a guided group of kayaks or paddleboards may stay eight. Up to three motorised craft under twelve metres may be inside at once, or one larger craft alone, and up to seven non-motorised craft entering through the eastern arch.

Landing on the sand inside is prohibited, as is entering by swimming or on any unpowered float, diving in or near the cave, and navigating there between sunset and sunrise. None of this is at the operator’s discretion — it is set out in Edital 019/2024 of the Portimão harbour master, and the fines start at €300.
